Re: Slide needle removal on IP2.
John, The reason for the bias is to maintain a uniform fuel flow between needle and jet and hence a constant fuel/air mixture. There is no simple way of keeping the needle in the middle of the jet so the alternate is to have it always to one side, hence the bias. Fuel flow from a concentric needle w...

Re: Slide needle removal on IP2.
John, I wasn't avoiding the question of the correct needle guide part number. It's just that I don't know and I doubt there's anyone left that does. Burlen certainly don't have any SU records of those carbs' specification. Perhaps you could persuade Andover Norton to strip one of their old-stock car...

Re: Slide needle removal on IP2.
John,
The correct needle for ALL Norton rotaries (except F1) is NZX 4030, stamped 'AEF'.
The needle was changed several times in production so the ones you have removed my be stamped something else.

IP2/Classic temperature gauge
The VDO gauge in my previous post is a good 'un!
Tested with a thermocouple wire and flame, it works just fine.
Ps is it possible to edit previous posts - and if so, how?

Re: Replacing Rotella for Silkolene
Is there any gasket on the oil pump cover that would need replacing? No gasket, it doesn't need to seal I have seen a picture of an F1 oil pump which has a phillips head screw near the two outlets, does that screw also serve a purpose with bleeding? That will bleed the pump only, but is really too ...

Re: Replacing Rotella for Silkolene
John, It's possible that the original oil that you've removed was clear whereas Silkolene is dark red and easily visible in the pipe. If you're not sure there is oil, even clear oil, in the pipe then it's better to bleed the pipe until you can see Silkolene at the oil pump. If it is actually air in ...

Philip, The tank wasn't from a particular car, but rather an accessory part, new, and probably came from eBay. The nearest one I can find now is a cylindrical upright one, 6.5" high x 3" diameter, with a screw top under "Tudor washer bottle". Might fit. No filter because I didn't...

'Morning Philip, Is ten years a record for resurrecting an old thread? I sold the Commander several years ago as it became too heavy for me to push it about, or more correctly, I became too feeble. I believe it now lives in Devon, owned by an avid Norton collector and still in regular use. The catch...

Yes, Roger (ex Slater-Laverda of Bromyard) did a lot of work on it, particularly to the now-Brembo front brakes and handlebar area. In the end, he sold it on as he stopped doing the long distance touring.

I see that Roger Slater's very nice blue Commander has just sold at the Mecum auction for $22,000.
This is the one I sent to the US a few years ago stripped down and sent in two boxes marked "Vintage motorcycle spares", together with an illustrated manual on how to rebuild it.

Charles,
Not while at Norton Shenstone, but later at Mid-West, there was a minor cooperation in the supply of parts, mainly heavy fuel rotor housings, when he was working for Patrick Power.

And just for you, Charles, photos of an odd engine that I'm unsure what it was for. Basically a Mid-West AE50R with fuel injection, I think it was a Mid-West employee's engine for his race hovercraft. The photo date puts if after MW had moved to Austria so I guess he just wanted it 'freshening'. Tha...

Front and rear are all Kawasaki ZXR750. Those are 6-piston calipers. A lot of swarf was created when machining the K rear fork to suit the pivot arrangement. Didn't run out of MZ bits, but used up the last of the F1 rear forks in Rugeley's stores. Arm 'n a leg for Spondon to make more. As a proporti...

Re: Supreme commander
The Supreme is actually a very good touring bike. In my opinion, the modifications gave it straight like stability up to maximum speed, something I wouldn't try with the standard set-up, tyre-screeching braking, and trail braking through bends without the bike wanting to pick up and go straight on. ...

Re: Supreme commander
OK, you've provoked me from slumber! At Norton Motors Rugeley, we converted eight standard Commanders to Supreme specification, only on of which was a Krauser. The main change was to offset the power unit 10mm to the left to give clearance for the chain gaiter on a 170/60 - 17 radial rear tyre. Fron...
