Re: Commander fuel tap seal

It's possible the original source might have been Yamaha as IP2 handlebar switches came from there.
Around that time, Norton tried to adapt the Yamaha XS750 into a police bike (without any commercial success) so perhaps the tap came from that model.

Re: Starter Sprag slipping

Those starter motors were originally made for the Triumph T160. The only change for the Norton application was a new drive end plate and an oil seal. IP2/Classic/Commander motors run in the opposite direction, so had the brush wires reversed and the direction arrow on the casing re-stamped. F1 motor...

Of course they are! All made in 1975 by Joe 'Prince of Darkness' Lucas and built in India.

Re: Starter Sprag slipping

Mick,
Just dismantle all the primary drive and you'll find it in the back of the clutch drum. Some simple tools and about four hours work, end to end. Seemples!
Now if it were the starter motor that needs replacing, that's very character-building.

Re: Carb adjustment

Tony, Thanks for the photo; confirms what I suspected - the brass jet is redundant in the Norton rotary application, a left-over from the same carburettor with a throttle spindle and butterfly for car applications. In the flat area of the carb bore, there are two holes drilled at about 45 degrees: D...

I recall also squirting carb cleaner up that passage and not coming to any conclusion; tomorrow will tell.

I'm not clear whether Tony Duffield's comment suggests there was a hole but no jet, or no hole at all in one of his carbs.

Thank you again Richard, I shall have a crack at converting one of my gaskets today.....I think I'll leave the other side alone, despite the parts list pictures, both gaskets should have the cut-out as they both have a fuel/air flow at idling. Thirty years to notice there's another error in the IP2 and Classic parts list! Fortunately, the Commander and F1 Sport lists are correct in specifying 50.0374 as the correct gasket for all SU installations. Andover don't list it as an available part, but easy enough to make from 55.0453 with either...

Re: Carb adjustment

Mick, That's the outlet gasket and casting. Look at the other end of the carb for the gasket that might be wrongly assembled.. By the way, the gasket you show should have a cut-out from the main bore to match the machining on the outlet casting. Your third photo shows that machining. Did AN supply t...

Re: Carb adjustment

Mick, Your fuel tap still has a prime function, but the lever plate (held with two screws) was replaced with a Norton one that doesn't allow prime to be used. This was because, if left in the prime position with a hot engine, fuel evaporates from the float chambers and ends up in the engine. The flo...

Re: Fuse Block

The rear KTM brake switch replaces the rear stop switch of IP2's and Classics.
It will also replace the rear master cylinder bolt of Commanders and F1's for those who have a dicky original Yamaha switch.
In either case, choose the KTM switch with two wires; loads on Ebay now.

Re: Carb adjustment

I had a few AEF's from them not so long ago so they do know about those.
Some owners of early IP2's, originally single rotor idle, may find they have an 'ADR' needle in one side. Most were converted to twin rotor idle and should have AEF needles in both sides.

Hi Mick, Places to start looking: .carb needles should be stamped 'AEF' just below the flange; SU's prototype of this was marked 'QX51', but is exactly the same needle. .check the gasket between the carburettor and its inlet casting. Original Norton ones were symmetrical but the Burlen ones can be f...

I believe I commented on the MZ suggestion some while ago. The MZ gaiter will not replace the Norton Item because:- .the MZ gaiter is much shorter than the Norton .the MZ chain is 428, or 1/2" x 5/16" .the Norton chain is 530, or 5/8" x 3/8" Andover Norton own the original mould ...

As you note, the engine must come out before the gearbox internals can be accessed, and before that, the primary drive must be dismantled. Re: Steel brakes lines for air-cooled IP2/Classic

I agree the standard IP2/Classic set-up is a bit 'wooden'. After fitting braided hoses and various brake pads with little effect, I changed the master cylinder to one with a smaller diameter piston. The one from a Kawasaki KLX500 is a very nice one, and gave squealy-tyre braking. Both Brembo and Yam...

Hi Blair, Turn the bars to the left and look at the r/h side of the headstock. The engine number is stamped ...

I've found that Yamaha cables have the same thread at each end and the square on the inner cable matches too. An industry standard perhaps?
I probably used the Commander cable, Yamaha part 2GH.83550.00, which was originally that from a 1987 FZR1000.
